We are Florida's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Saint Petersburg raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Saint Petersburg pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Saint Petersburg Raccoon Control Tip: What Can I Do to Get a Raccoon Out of My Attic?
So, you have discovered that a raccoon is living in your attic. Maybe you have already seen some of the damage that it is caused. These animals are destructive little critters, tearing apart your clothing, furniture, newspaper clippings, books, and any other personal property you have stored in your attic.
Plus, they have left their urine and feces around, creating a huge health risk for you. These animals are the carriers of a number of diseases that pose a risk to you and your family. This includes rabies. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg. Parasites, viruses, and bacteria are commonly found in the waste of a raccoon, meaning you want that animal out as quickly as possible.
Taking a More Passive Approach
You could go up there and try to scare the animal out yourself. Put up a trap or poison the raccoon. All of those could be effective, but they put you at risk. The last thing you want is to be bitten or scratched by one of these animals. This could be fatal to you. We are not kidding about that.
Instead, you want to take an approach that allows the raccoon to get out without you having to do very much to make that happen. This is where the exclusion funnel will be the perfect option for you.
The Exclusion Funnel
If you are unfamiliar with this device, it is a type of trap that allows the raccoon to get out of your home, but not get back in. It is good at getting these critters out, and keeping them out.To start, do a search around the outside of your home. Look for loose boards, cracks, or gaps where the raccoon is getting into your home. If you find one, don't just stop. There could be other ways that it is getting in. If you find more than one, seal them so there is just one left.
Next, attach your exclusion funnel to the entryway the raccoon is using. Make sure it is firmly in place.
Your next step is to wait until it is nearing dusk. Raccoons are nocturnal animals, meaning that they come out when it is dark. This is because they can't see very well.
As your final step, add a large lamp or stereo speakers into your attic area. Make sure you firmly closed the door after you have placed one of these items inside the attic. When it gets to be dark, turn on the bright light or the loud music. This will startle the raccoon, sending it out your exclusion funnel. Once it is outside, it cannot get back in.
After it is out, take down the exclusion funnel and repair any damage to the outside of your home. This is really all it takes. A little bit of effort and an exclusion funnel and you can rid yourself of this raccoon. Now you are to the final step. Having to clean up the mess left behind. Ugh!
